Graceland Hotel

Graceland Hotel and Casino in Secunda, South Africa with Southern-inspired Victorian architecture

From the American South to the South African Veld: Crafting Old-World Charm at Graceland

In the heart of Mpumalanga’s coal country lies an unexpected oasis of entertainment: the Graceland Hotel, Casino & Country Club. For this project in Secunda, South Africa, Steelman Partners was tasked with a unique vision: to design a full-service resort that paid tribute to the grand, welcoming charm of the American South. Completed in 1997, Graceland was a key collaboration in South Africa’s emerging casino market, showcasing our ability to create an immersive, thematic experience that felt both nostalgic and brand new. The result is a destination that feels like a Mississippi riverboat town gracefully set down in the African veld.

The Vision: Classical Southern Architecture with a Modern Touch

The architectural motif for Graceland’s hotel and casino draws inspiration from the Victorian manors of the American South. The Steelman Partners design features a stately, colonnaded entrance, wide verandas perfect for enjoying the evening air, and a cupola-topped lobby that evokes the classical estates of Louisiana.

Inside, the casino immerses guests in the theme with playful yet elegant references to the Deep South. Paddle fans turn gently overhead, wrought-iron detailing recalls New Orleans balconies, and rich oak and brass finishes provide a warm, inviting glow. The gaming areas were intentionally designed to be intimate, prioritizing comfort and small-town hospitality over overwhelming glitz. However, signature Steelman flourishes elevate the experience, including painted sky ceilings that create a perpetual sense of pleasant twilight and clever lighting that transitions from day to night, subtly influencing the atmosphere.

The Master Plan: Integrating Entertainment and Nature

Beyond the casino, the resort boasts a Gary Player-designed 18-hole golf course and country club. A core element of our master plan was the seamless integration of these elements. At a time when many casinos were designed to be insular and inward-facing, we took a forward-thinking approach. Large windows throughout the hotel and restaurants frame stunning views of the rolling greens, marrying the energy of entertainment with the tranquility of nature. This design philosophy creates a holistic resort experience.

The overall atmosphere is one of “old world charm and warm hospitality,” a promise the resort proudly keeps. Our team achieved this by blending thematic design with genuine comfort—high ceilings, plentiful natural light, and decor that is nostalgic without feeling kitschy.

The Legacy: A Landmark of Thematic Design

As the first casino in the province, Graceland’s opening was a significant milestone. Its distinct theme and welcoming design quickly made it a popular getaway for tourists and residents of nearby Johannesburg. For Steelman Partners, this project showcased our versatility—the ability to pivot from designing mega-resorts to crafting a boutique regional casino that delivers powerful, immersive storytelling. Decades later, Graceland continues to thrive, proving that thoughtful theming paired with right-sized, guest-focused design creates a legacy of lasting appeal.
